Many Distinct Neighborhoods Make Up Historic Philadelphia
Press Release
Backgrounder Many Distinct Neighborhoods Make Up Historic Philadelphia PHILADELPHIA, April 3, 2008 - The area between Front to 7th Streets and Race to Spruce Streets encompasses distinctive and dynamic neighborhoods that together make up Historic Philadelphia. Here’s a look at what distinguishes these vibrant communities: Old City Photo by J. Smith for GPTMC Independence National Historical Park: Regarded as the nation’s most historic square mile, Independence National Historical Park tells the story of how American democracy came to be through historic landmarks and attractions. New additions like the Liberty Bell Center and the National Constitution Center join classic favorites such as Independence Hall and the Carpenters' Hall to take visitors back to the time of the nation’s Founding Fathers.
Old City: Filled with former factories that have been transformed into airy condominiums, Old City is the province of upscale restaurants, nightclubs and galleries. While maintaining its authentic quality, it has become a popular destination for a delicious meal, an edgy art show and an entertaining night out. On the first Friday of each month, dozens of the area’s premier galleries keep their doors open late and provide free refreshments for wandering art lovers.
Society Hill: With its cobblestone streets and centuries-old architecture, the charming and elegant Society Hill invites visitors to step back in time. Founded in the 1860s by the Free Society of Traders, a stock trading company associated with Pennsylvania founder William Penn, Society Hill serves as the perfect place for an aimless walk or a horse and carriage ride.
Penn’s Landing: Penn’s Landing, the centerpiece of Philadelphia’s waterfront, hosts events on its Festival Pier and Great Plaza all year long. Throughout the summer, free multicultural festivals, themed concerts and family events delight those looking to enjoy the warm-weather months. Come winter, visitors can lace up and try their moves on the Blue Cross RiverRink. The nearby Independence Seaport Museum offers visitors a rare close-up look at two historic naval ships, the cruiser Olympia and the submarine Becuna.
Jewelers’ Row: Jewelers’ Row is America’s oldest diamond district—and one of the largest. Hundreds of independent jewelry stores line the brick-paved streets with a virtually unlimited selection of fine jewelry. Jewelers’ Row offers not only diamonds, but also a seemingly unlimited selection of watches, precious stones, pearls, gold and beautiful settings to match.
